A_Parallel_Tracking_of_Salivary_and_Gut_Microbiota_Profiles_Can_Reveal_Maturation_and_Interplay_of_Early_Life_Microbial_Communities_in_Healthy_Infants

Publication: In_this_study_,the_onset_and_shaping_of_the_salivary_and_gut_microbiota_in_healthy_newborns_during_the_first_period_of_life_has_been_followed,evaluating_the_impact_of_salivary_microbiota_on_the_development_of_early_fecal_microbial_communities._The_microbiota_of_80_salivary_and_82_fecal_samples_that_were_collected_from_healthy_newborns_in_the_first_six_months_of_life,was_investigated_by_16S_rRNA_amplicon_profiling._The_microbial_relationship_within_and_between_the_saliva_and_gut_ecosystems_was_determined_by_correlation_heatmaps_and_co-occurrence_networks._Streptococcus_and_Staphylococcus_appeared_as_early_commensals_in_the_salivary_microbiota,dominating_this_ecosystem_through_the_time,while_Fusobacterium,Prevotella,Porphyromonas,Granulicatella,and_Veillonella_were_late_colonizers._Enterobacteriaceae,Staphylococcus_and_Streptococcus_were_gut_pioneers,followed_by_the_anaerobic_Bifidobacterium,Veillonella,Eggerthella,and_Bacteroides._Streptococcus,Staphylococcus,and_Veillonella_were_shared_by_the_gut_and_saliva_ecosystems._The_saliva_and_gut_microbiota_seem_to_evolve_independently_,driven_by_local_adaptation_strategies,except_for_the_oral_Streptococcus_and_Veillonella_that_are_involved_in_gut_microbiota_development_as_seeding_species._This_study_offers_a_piece_of_knowledge_on_how_the_oral_microbiota_may_affect_the_gut_microbiota_in_healthy_newborns,shedding_light_onto_new_microbial_targets_for_the_development_of_therapies_for_early_life_intestinal_dysbiosis.
