Microbiome_differences_in_periodontal,peri-implant,and_healthy_sites:a_cross-sectional_pilot_study

Publication: Objectives_To_explore_microbial_communities_associated_with_health_and_disease_status_around_teeth_and_dental_implants._Materials_and_methods_A_total_of_10_healthy,24_periodontitis,and_24_peri-implant_sites_from_24_patients_were_sequenced_by_next-generation_sequencing._Microbial_DNA_was_extracted_and_16S_rRNA_gene_was_amplified._Bioinformatic_analyses_were_performed_using_quantitative_insights_into_microbial_ecology_(QIIME),linear_discriminant_analysis_effect_size_(LEfSE),and_STAMP._Results_Differences_in_microbial_diversity_across_three_types_of_sites_were_not_statistically_significant._Several_genera_and_species_were_more_prevalent_in_healthy_compared_with_diseased_sites,including_Lautropia,Rothia_and_Capnocytophaga_and_Kingella._Among_diseased_sites,Peptostreptococcaceae,Dialister,Mongibacterium,Atopobium,and_Filifactor_were_overrepresented_in_peri-implantitis_sites,while_Bacteroidales_was_more_abundant_in_periodontitis_sites._Conclusions_Diseased_periodontal_and_peri-implant_sites_and_corresponding_healthy_sites_have_distinct_microbiological_profiles._These_findings_suggest_that_microbial_analyses_could_identify_biomarkers_for_periodontal_health_and_disease_and_lead_to_the_development_of_new_strategies_to_improve_periodontal_health_and_treat_peri-implant_and_periodontal_diseases._Clinical_relevance_The_study_contributes_to_improving_our_understanding_of_healthy,periodontally_affected,and_peri-implantitis_sites_which_can_improve_our_ability_to_diagnose,monitor,and_manage_these_oral_conditions.
