Electronic_Cigarette_Use_Promotes_a_Unique_Periodontal_Microbiome

Publication: Electronic_cigarettes_(e-cigs)_have_become_prevalent_as_an_alternative_to_conventional_cigarette_smoking,particularly_in_youth._E-cig_aerosols_contain_unique_chemicals_which_alter_the_oral_microbiome_and_promote_dysbiosis_in_ways_we_are_just_beginning_to_investigate._We_conducted_a_6-month_longitudinal_study_involving_84_subjects_who_were_either_e-cig_users,conventional_smokers,or_nonsmokers._Periodontal_condition,cytokine_levels,and_subgingival_microbial_community_composition_were_assessed,with_periodontal,clinical,and_cytokine_measures_reflecting_cohort_habit_and_positively_correlating_with_pathogenic_taxa_(e.g.,Treponema,Saccharibacteria,a_n_d_Porphyromonas)._a-Diversity_increased_similarly_across_cohorts_longitudinally,yet_each_cohort_maintained_a_unique_microbiome._The_e-cig_microbiome_shared_many_characteristics_with_the_microbiome_of_conventional_smokers_and_some_with_nonsmokers,yet_it_maintained_a_unique_subgingival_microbial_community_enriched_in_Fusobacterium_and_Bacteroidales_(G-2)._Our_data_suggest_that_e-cig_use_promotes_a_unique_periodontal_microbiome,existing_as_a_stable_heterogeneous_state_between_those_of_conventional_smokers_and_nonsmokers_and_presenting_unique_oral_health_challenges.
