Publication: The_effect_of_electronic_cigarette_(e-cigarette)_smoking,_especially_its_long-term_impact_on_oral_health,_is_poorly_understood._Here,_we_conducted_a_longitudinal_clinical_study_with_two_study_visits,_6_months_apart,_to_investigate_the_effect_of_e-cigarette_use_on_the_bacterial_community_structure_in_the_saliva_of_101_periodontitis_patients._Our_data_demonstrated_that_e-cigarette_use_altered_the_oral_microbiome_in_periodontitis_patients,_enriching_members_of_the_Filifactor,_Treponema,_a_n_d_Fusobacterium_taxa._For_patients_at_the_same_periodontal_disease_stage,_cigarette_smokers_and_e-cigarette_smokers_shared_more_similarities_in_their_oral_bacterial_composition._E-cigarette_smoking_may_have_a_similar_potential_as_cigarette_smoking_at_altering_the_bacterial_composition_of_saliva_over_time,_leading_to_an_increase_in_the_relative_abundance_of_periodontal_disease-associated_pathogens_such_as_Porphyromonas_gingivalis_and_Fusobacterium_nucleatum._The_correlation_analysis_showed_that_certain_genera,_such_as_Dialister,_Selenomonas,_a_n_d_Leptotrichia_in_the_e-cigarette_smoking_group,_were_positively_correlated_with_the_levels_of_proinflammatory_cytokines,_including_IFN-¦Ã,_IL-1¦Â,_and_TNF-¦Á._E-cigarette_use_was_also_associated_with_elevated_levels_of_proinflammatory_cytokines_such_as_IFN-¦Ã_and_TNF-¦Á,_which_contribute_to_oral_microbiome_dysbiosis_and_advanced_disease_state.
