Dysbiosis_of_Oral_and_Gut_Microbiomes_in_SARS-CoV-2_Infected_Patients_in_Bangladesh:Elucidating_the_Role_of_Opportunistic_Gut_Microbes

Publication: Coronavirus_disease-2019_(COVID-19)_is_an_infectious_disease_caused_by_SARS-CoV-2_virus._The_microbes_inhabiting_the_oral_cavity_and_gut_might_play_crucial_roles_in_maintaining_a_favorable_gut_environment,and_their_relationship_with_SARS-CoV-2_infection_susceptibility_and_severity_is_yet_to_be_fully_explored._This_study_investigates_the_diversity_and_species_richness_of_gut_and_oral_microbiota_of_patients_with_COVID-19,and_their_possible_implications_toward_the_severity_of_the_patient¡¯_s_illness_and_clinical_outcomes._Seventy-four_(n_=_74)_clinical_samples_(gut_and_oral)_were_collected_from_22_hospitalized_patients_with_COVID-19_with_various_clinical_conditions_and_15_apparently_healthy_people_(served_as_controls)._This_amplicon-based_metagenomic_sequencing_study_yielded_1,866,306_paired-end_reads_that_were_mapped_to_21_phyla_and_231_classified_genera_of_bacteria._Alpha_and_beta_diversity_analyses_revealed_a_distinct_dysbiosis_of_the_gut_and_oral_microbial_communities_in_patients_with_COVID-19,compared_to_healthy_controls._We_report_that_SARS-CoV-2_infection_significantly_reduced_richness_and_evenness_in_the_gut_and_oral_microbiomes_despite_showing_higher_unique_operational_taxonomic_units_in_the_gut._The_gut_samples_of_the_patients_with_COVID-19_included_46_opportunistic_bacterial_genera._Escherichia,Shigella,and_Bacteroides_were_detected_as_the_signature_genera_in_the_gut_of_patients_with_COVID-19_with_diarrhea,whereas_a_relatively_higher_abundance_of_Streptococcus_was_found_in_patients_with_COVID-19_having_breathing_difficulties_and_sore_throat_(BDST)._The_patients_with_COVID-19_had_a_significantly_lower_abundance_of_Prevotella_in_the_oral_cavity,compared_to_healthy_controls_and_patients_with_COVID-19_without_diabetes,respectively._The_altered_metabolic_pathways,including_a_reduction_in_biosynthesis_capabilities_of_the_gut_and_oral_microbial_consortia_after_SARS-CoV-2_infection,were_also_observed._The_present_study_may,therefore,shed_light_on_interactions_of_SARS-CoV-2_with_resilient_oral_and_gut_microbes_which_might_contribute_toward_developing_microbiome-based_diagnostics_and_therapeutics_for_this_deadly_pandemic_disease.
