Dietary_carbohydrate_intake_is_associated_with_the_subgingival_plaque_oral_microbiome_abundance_and_diversity_in_a_cohort_of_postmenopausal_women

Publication: Limited_research_exists_on_carbohydrate_intake_and_oral_microbiome_diversity_and_composition_assessed_with_next?generation_sequencing._We_aimed_to_better_understand_the_association_between_habitual_carbohydrate_intake_and_the_oral_microbiome,as_the_oral_microbiome_has_been_associated_with_caries,periodontal_disease,and_systemic_diseases._We_investigated_if_total_carbohydrates,starch,monosaccharides,disaccharides,fiber,or_glycemic_load_(GL)_were_associated_with_the_diversity_and_composition_of_oral_bacteria_in_subgingival_plaque_samples_of_1204_post?menopausal_women._Carbohydrate_intake_and_GL_were_assessed_from_a_food_frequency_questionnaire,and_adjusted_for_energy_intake._The_V3¨CV4_region_of_the_16S_rRNA_gene_from_subgingival_plaque_samples_were_sequenced_to_identify_the_relative_abundance_of_microbiome_compositional_data_expressed_as_operational_taxonomic_units_(OTUs)._The_abundance_of_OTUs_were_centered_log(2)?ratio_transformed_to_account_for_the_compositional_data_structure._Associations_between_carbohydrate/GL_intake_and_microbiome_alpha?diversity_measures_were_examined_using_linear_regression._PERMANOVA_analyses_were_conducted_to_examine_microbiome_beta?diversity_measures_across_quartiles_of_carbohydrate/GL_intake._Associations_between_intake_of_carbohydrates_and_GL_and_the_abundance_of_the_245_identified_OTUs_were_examined_by_using_linear_regression._Total_carbohydrates,GL,starch,lactose,and_sucrose_intake_were_inversely_associated_with_alpha?diversity_measures._Beta?diversity_across_quartiles_of_total_carbohydrates,fiber,GL,sucrose,and_galactose,were_all_statistically_significant_(p_for_PERMANOVA_p_<_0.05)._Positive_associations_were_observed_between_total_carbohydrates,GL,sucrose_and_Streptococcus_mutans;_GL_and_both_Sphingomonas_HOT_006_and_Scardovia_wiggsiae;_and_sucrose_and_Streptococcus_lactarius._A_negative_association_was_observed_between_lactose_and_Aggregatibacter_segnis,and_between_sucrose_and_both_TM7_[G-1]_HOT_346_and_Leptotrichia_HOT_223._Intake_of_total_carbohydrate,GL,and_sucrose_were_inversely_associated_with_subgingival_bacteria_alpha?diversity,the_microbial_beta?diversity_varied_by_their_intake,and_they_were_associated_with_the_relative_abundance_of_specific_OTUs._Higher_intake_of_sucrose,or_high_GL_foods,may_influence_poor_oral_health_outcomes_(and_perhaps_systemic_health_outcomes)_in_older_women_via_their_influence_on_the_oral_microbiome.
